Tanhaji versus Chhapaak was the first big clash of Bollywood in this new year 2020. Everyone was looking forward to furious box office battle between these 2 movies. While one is big budget historic movie starring Super Star Ajay Devgn, another one is an emotional portrayal of real life acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal played by lady Super Star Deepika Padukone.
Everything was going neck to neck for both the movies before 1 week of release & then on 7th January 2020 evening, just 3 days before release date, Deepika Padukone visited JNU campus to stand in solidarity with JNU students. This created a huge controversy and Chhapaak was all over the Social Media, News channel debates, Newspapers, WhatsApp messages, everywhere. Campaigns to boycott Chhapaak started spreading like wildfire. Lot of people considered it as publicity stunt by Deepika who is also producer of the movie.
Many started thinking Chhapaak will get huge benefit from this controversy and will open on with strong numbers on Friday, 10th January. Same scenario was witnessed with last release of Deepika, Padmavat, which also had seen nationwide protest and tremendous box office results. Those who were promoting Chhapaak boycott also started posting social media posts in favor of Tanhaji mentioning that it displays the valor of a true Hindu warrior who displayed courage to fight against atrocities of Mughals.
But, box office is as unpredictable as cricket match or share market. You can expect a certain result but there isn’t any guarantee of achieving it. Tanhaji started decently in the morning but by the evening highly positive word of mouth took over social media. Most of the audience members were hailing Tanhaji as wonderful movie. Against this, Chhapaak started on not so exciting note in morning shows as it wasn’t a mass appealing movie and also audience word of mouth declared it as unappealing product.
By the end of weekend, scenario was crystal clear. It turned out to be one horse race. Tanhaji was marching way ahead and Chhapaak was not even visible. Weekend numbers of Tanhaji were huge 62 crores while Chhapaak hardly collected 19 crores. Difference was more than 3 times.
As on date, after 11 days of release, Tanhaji is proudly standing 176 crores (approximately), while Chhapaak struggled a lot to collect mere 31.50 crores. Which means, first 2days’ collections of Tanhaji would be higher than lifetime business of Chhapaak. Even if we keep collections aside, Chhapaak has been rejected by audience as word of mouth was below average to negative from the first shoe itself.
Bottom line, in Tanhaji versus Chhapaak battle, Tanhaji is the first Super Hit of 2020 and Chhapaak is first disappointment of 2020.
P.S. – Tanhaji’s success or Chhapaak’s failure has nothing to do with Deepika’s JNU controversy. These results are purely on the basis of acceptance & rejection of content.
